Economic Highlights
In the US, against the backdrop of a full-scale tariff war, retail sales and industrial production data for March are both on the release sheet. The figures will be watched closely, as any disappointing readings could push the risk of recession higher. Across the border in Canada, the national bank convenes for its April meeting. Market expectations point to a 25 basis point rate cut, matching the decision taken in March. Meanwhile, last month’s inflation figures will be revealed on Tuesday, with the data set to influence policymakers at the Bank of Canada.
As for Europe, all eyes will be on the outcome of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) April meeting. Market analysts expect bank officials to approve a 25 basis point rate cut on Thursday. However, the fast-moving tariff environment, which is escalating by the day, could prompt a slight revision to these predictions. UK inflation and labour data will also be the subject of much attention when they land in the next few days. Aside from this, Germany has a busy week of releases ahead, publishing the ZEW economic sentiment survey alongside PPI and wholesale price figures.
Over in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, the Bank of Korea (BoK) is considering a potential rate cut ahead of its upcoming meeting on Thursday. Elsewhere, China reveals a raft of figures for March including Q1 GDP, retail sales and industrial production data. Rounding off the rest of the APAC nations, Australia reveals its latest employment numbers, Japan publishes its trade and inflation figures and Singapore reports its Q1 GDP.
