We’re back with the latest instalment of our market preview in what is set to be a busy few days ahead. The week begins with a market holiday in the US, as Donald Trump officially marks the start of his second term as US President with an official inauguration ceremony in Washington DC. Meanwhile, the stock markets will be braced for the impact of key upcoming earnings reports from the likes of Netflix, Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, and American Express, among others.
Economic Highlights
Amid a monumental week for the nation’s politics, several other important US-related releases are expected in the coming days, including December’s existing home sales figures and the final University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey for January. Across the border in Canada, attention will turn to updated inflation and retail sales data for December.
In the UK, the release of the country’s latest labour market report means that employment data will take centre stage, as analysts wait to see the impact of the government’s Autumn Budget on the job market. As for Europe, Germany will present expert insights into investor confidence through the publication of the ZEW economic sentiment index, while PPI data for December is also scheduled in.
Moving on to the Asia-Pacific nations, investors will watch for hints of a potential interest rate hike at the first Bank of Japan (BoJ) meeting of the year, with the country also publishing its inflation and trade numbers. Aside from Japan, other notable releases include inflation figures for Singapore, Malaysia, and New Zealand, while Q4 GDP data is due for South Korea and Taiwan.
